Virtual Meeting Expectations
It is super important to set virtual classroom rules and expectations just like you would for classroom expectations! I have been virtual teaching for about a month now and these 9 virtual meeting rules have saved my life! My class knows what they are and I reference them just like I would in my in person classroom.
My top 9 Virtual Classroom Rules
- Be on time for your live lessons! I give a 5 minute grace period for my kids to join the calls. I also like to share my daily agenda slides and add a timer to the slides so they can see exactly when I’m going to start.
- Stay in your seat once we have started. Leave your device in one place. I explained to my students how important it is to leave your iPad on your workspace and not get up unless they need to go to the bathroom or have a break.
- Make sure your device is charged and ready to use. Don’t forget to plug your device up each night so you are ready to go for the next day!
- Turn your microphone off when you join! This is obviously a personal preference but I like to have them off when we join and I give them time to share and talk to their friends too! The social piece is SUPER important right now since a lot of these kids haven’t seen their friends in months!
- Raise your hand to share. This one is perfect because when/if we go back in person they will *hopefully* already be used to raising their hand to get your attention!
- Eat before or after your live lessons. I give quite a few breaks and always remind them to eat a snack, get a drink, and go to the bathroom!
- Make sure you are dressed appropriately and covered up. I’m a little lenient on this, mostly because I’m just happy they logged in! I don’t fuss over pajamas, but I do remind them to be covered up!
- Try to keep pets away from your workspace. I know my dogs would be snuggled up in my lap and cats love keyboards, so it’s just easier to keep pets in a different room during virtual learning if you can!
- Remember, everyone can see everything! Kids, parents, EVERYONE CAN SEE EVERYTHING. Please be aware of what is happening behind you!

Once you’ve taught off of your expectations, you can use this review game for your students to practice on their own or with their families!
